REVIEW: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ DVD / Blu-Ray
The extended/deleted scenes offer an interesting insight into Gamora and Nebula’s relationship, and the gag reel features a rewarding clip of the cast and crew having a dance-off party. Guardians of the Galaxy’s DVD special features also include commentary with director James Gunn along with three featurettes.
The first featurette, a “Guide to the Galaxy” with Gunn, is composed of interviews, on-set footage, and concept art. The featurette gives an impressive look at the scope of the making of the film. It gives an in-depth tour of the locations our Guardians traveled to – from the dark and beautiful Morag to bustling criminal outpost Knowhere. The sets are phenomenal—our personal favorite is the prisoner complex the Klyn, which hardly needed any CGI touch-ups.
The second featurette expands on the visual designs; James Gunn’s original concept art came to fruition without many changes—he originated the idea of the Nova Corps forming an energy barrier to keep the Dark Aster contained. Rocket and Groot’s visual evolution is fascinating to watch, with the filmmakers also talking about character personalities and contrasts between a plant and an animal.
The third and final featurette is the one that made our hearts stop. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen: behind-the-scenes footage of The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Joss Whedon introduces brief but epic shots of their beautiful set locations, car explosions, and our favorite actors shooting arrows or wielding a shield.
If anything, fans of Guardians of the Galaxy will love the behind-the-scenes footage; and fans of Marvel in general will leap to get their hands on the exclusive look at The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
